What to bring after receiving a criminal proceedings summons

Editorial update: 27 October 2026 · Matrimonialistas editorial team

Who this helps

To help the lawyer identify who has summoned you, in what capacity and for which procedural step. Not all summonses mean the same thing.

What to prepare

You can attend even if documents are missing. Flag any deadline or urgent notice at the time of booking.

Essential to explain your situation

  • The full summons, including attachments, envelope or receipt confirmation.
  • When you received it, the attendance date and issuing authority.
  • The case number and your stated capacity, exactly as shown.

Useful if already available

  • Earlier notices concerning the same matter.
  • A short timeline and details of existing legal representation, if any.

Only if requested and relevant

  • The complete case file and specific records needed for the defence assessment.

Questions to take to the appointment

  • In what capacity am I summoned and what will take place?
  • What assistance or representation do I need for that step?
  • What should I do if something prevents attendance?

Common preparation mistakes

  • Ignoring the summons or waiting until after the stated date.
  • Providing a cropped photograph that omits pages or notices.
